A lot of buyers in Oakland, a city full of creatives and visionaries, are more attracted to homes that haven't been renovated. And homes with tasteful but unique touches often outshine the competition.
I'm from Detroit, where a mix of gorgeous yet decaying (and inexpensive) homes plus a thriving creative community means that art can be found everywhere; from abandoned buildings and neglected neighborhoods to stunning murals. Like a true Detroiter, I find inspiration in unique design and found art.
Check out the work of a Detroit florist who is creating floral art installations in abandoned buildings in order to inspire "others 'to see abandoned structures as platforms for art and business, and to use them in an environmentally responsible way. '" In October, when the installation ends, the land will be converted to a design center and urban flower farm.
